Orlando Pirates defender Innocent Maela says that winning the Premiership with the club would be something he would take tremendous pride in.

Maela came up through the Pirates academy and as such is eager to help the club end a trophy drought that stretches back five years.

“Winning for Orlando Pirates‚ taking into consideration that I was here during my development days in the academy – so for me to be in a position where I can win something for the club‚ would be out of this world‚ definitely‚” Maela told Times Live.

Maela said the mood in the camp was good while also being very focused, with each game becoming more significant than the one before at this stage of the season.

The defender said that having experienced players around them had helped Pirates push to the front of the queue in the title race.

“Obviously the mood is good‚ the guys are working hard in training and there is excitement but we also have people who are experienced like Musa Nyatama‚ Happy Jele‚ Mpho Makola‚ Thabo (Matlaba) … people who have been there,” he added.

“They try so much to keep us grounded‚ for us to always stay humble‚ listening to the coaches and making sure that we keep going‚ keep improving.”

The PSL record Pirates could still break.

Coach Milutin Sredojevic, has learned not to count his chickens before they hatch and is driving his team to maintain their focus and hold onto the lead.

“We can see that it is close but we know that we also need to focus on the next match,” Maela said.

Pirates lead the PSL log having picked up 50 points from their 27 matches but have Mamelodi Sundowns breathing down their necks three points back with a game in hand.

How many, if any, points the PSL choose to dock from Sundowns for fielding Wayne Arendse prior to him becoming eligible to play for the club could determine who takes home the title.
