Mamelodi Sundowns could have been forgiven for expecting a hostile reception in Casablanca, where they faced Wydad Athletic Club (WAC) on Saturday night, but that wasn’t the case for coach Pitso Mosimane.

The Tshwane giants remain on top of the Group C standings in the Caf Champions League after holding the Moroccans to a goalless draw on Saturday night.

The former Bafana mentor, whose profile on the continent soared since guiding his side to champions league glory in 2016.

Rivalry momentarily put aside in Casablanca

The result on the day saw Sundowns come away with a point away to Wydad for the first time, in what has been a budding rivalry over the past three editions of the Caf Champions League.

The Brazilians met the Moroccan outfit in the quarterfinal stage of their title defence in 2017, and it’s where their campaign ended as they were narrowly beaten over two legs.

The previous instalment of Africa’s premier competition saw Pitso Mosimane’s men make two trips to Rabat.

They met in the group stage of the tournament, and were to review rivalries later on in the semi-finals.

Once more, Sundowns’ participation in the tournament ended in the hands of Wydad, who made another final, only to lose to Esperance de Tunis in controversial fashion in the final.

Sundowns return to North Africa towards the end of the year, where they face Algerian giants USM Alger in their next Group C encounter.

They resume their Caf Champions League campaign in February, as they host the same team at a venue yet to be decided.
