A goalkeeping blunder from Tunisia’s Moez Ben Cherifia gifted Nigeria’s Odion Ighalo a goal in the third minute of Wednesday’s Africa Cup of Nations third place playoff at Cairo’s Al Salam Stadium.

Both the Super Eagles and the Carthage Eagles each came into this match off the back of narrow semi-final defeats. Tunisia went down 1-0 to Senegal in extra time while Nigeria were knocked out by a late Riyad Mahrez free-kick in a 2-1 defeat to Algeria.

Gernot Rohr’s men came out of the blocks flying in this match and were duly rewarded after a mix-up at the back from Alain Giresse’s team. Jamilu Collins put in a cross from the left which goalkeeper Ben Cherifia failed to get hold of. It came off defender Yassine Meriah and Ighalo was left to tap in his fifth goal of the tournament.

Ighalo now sits two ahead of the chasing pack in the Afcon 2019 top scorers race, while Ben Cherifia’s blunder was just one in a string of calamitous errors made by Tunisia goalkeepers during this tournament. This was a nightmare start for the man who replaced Mouez Hassen in goal.
