The unfancied TS Galaxy do not only have a heavy presence of Kaizer Chiefs fans to contend with when they step onto the turf at Moses Mabhida Stadium for the Nedbank Cup final – but also stacks of history heavily piled against them.

The first-division outfit are looking to become the first lower league side to triumph in the competition, after becoming the fifth team from the second tier to make it to the final hurdle.

Having only been formed in 2015, Galaxy are in their first ever major cup final, and are up against the country’s most successful club, with no less than 53 trophies in tow.

They will, however, fancy their chances – given the fact that the Glamour Boys have not added to that figure in four years, and are coming off their worst league campaign in the PSL era.

Kaizer Chiefs impressive record in Nedbank Cup finals

While history often counts for nothing on such occasions, smart money is still on a Chiefs win, thanks to how well they have done in the competition over the years.

Since the tournament’s inception in 1971, under the name Life Challenge Cup, the Soweto giants have contested the final 18 times, only finishing as runners up on five occasions.

Their chief tormentors in the final have been their biggest rivals Orlando Pirates, who have beaten them three times in the final, with Witbank Aces and Supersport United the other teams to halt Amakhosi on the last hurdle.

Matsatsansa were the last team to inflict defeat on them back in the 1999 final, where goals from the late Thomas Madigage and Glen Salmon were enough to see them through, despite a late penalty from Pollen Ndlanya.

The Glamour Boys bounced back immediately the following year, beating Pirates in the final, and have gone on to contest two more finals – coming off victorious on both occasions.
