Ahead of the visit of the Bulls to Newlands to face the Stormers in Super Rugby on Saturday we look at recent meetings between the sides.
The last time the sides met was on the opening weekend of the season when the Bulls walloped the Stormers 40-3 at Loftus Versfeld.
Rosko Specman will not feature for the Bulls at Newlands but he was the darling of Loftus back in February, stepping through the Stormers defence to score the first try of their 2019 campaign. Specman added a second before Johnny Kotze and Jesse Kriel ensured the Bulls claimed a full house of log points to start.
Handre Pollard’s kicking game was on song as he nailed eight goal kicks and a tally of 20 points.
Bulls 40-3 Stormers – Loftus Versveld 16 February 2019
The last time the Bulls visited Newlands they were sent away with nothing as the Stormers ran out 27-19 winners in a round 12 clash in 2018.
The Stormers victory was set up by their dominance up front and the attacking instincts of Damian Willemse.
Two early tries put the home side on top before Bulls lock Lood de Jager, who recently signed for the Sale Sharks, burst through the Stormers defensive line like a centre.
A lapse in the Stormers defence allowed the Bulls to briefly take the lead before the hosts outside backs almost immediately hit back.
When the game opened up it played into the Stormers hands and they closed out a good win at home.
Stormers 29-17 Bulls – Newlands 5 May 2018
The Bulls haven’t beaten the Stormers at Newlands since February 2008 when they ran out 16-9 winners.
Bryan Habana scored the only try on that occasion, the match took on the typical shape of a South African derby of the time, with the kicking game dominant.
