Super Rugby’s reigning champions the Crusaders have made a rare trip to Newlands, where they are set to meet the Stormers on their way to possibly securing a quarterfinal spot.

The men from Christchurch have enjoyed some success in the Mother City, as well as decent support from the locals, who have come to be known as the Cape Crusaders.

The nine-time champions are chasing a third consecutive title, and are up against a side desperate to climb up from fourth place in the South African conference, where a playoff spot now hangs in the balance.

Stormers vs Crusaders head-to-head

You have to go back a long way for the last time the Stormers were victorious in this particular fixture, as the Kiwis have been dominant in recent years.

The men from the Cape last recorded a win over the Crusaders nine years ago when they stunned them with a 42-14 thumping at Newlands.

Since then, the ‘Saders have gone on to win the last seven clashes between these two sides.

Last time at Newlands

The current Super Rugby format means that teams can avoid playing each other for an entire season, and the Stormers and Crusaders have managed not to cross paths on a few occasions.

The last two clashes between these two sides happened in Christchurch, and the last at Newlands dates all the way back to March 2013.

On that occasion, it was a tight affair just with five points separating the sides.

A young Siya Kolisi touched down from the home side, with Joe Peterson slotting over three penalties, but that was not enough as the visitors managed to skate past with a 19-14 win.
