Preview: South Africa vs Sri Lanka, 1st T20I
South Africa and Sri Lanka are still in Cape Town, where they are due to meet for the opening game of their three-match T20 International series on Tuesday afternoon.
The visitors stunned the Proteas in the Test series, claiming a historic 2-0 victory, while the visitors returned the favour with a whitewash of their own, as the registered a 5-0 win in the ODIs.
One more series to go, and it could be one which determines whether the Islanders’ tour has been a success.
Sri Lanka will be hoping to repeat the heroics of their last visit to South Africa, where they claimed at 2-1 series victory in the shortest format after what had been a wretched tour.
They will be coming up against a determined South African side, who have named a strong squad mostly comprising of players who did duty in the recently completed ODI series.
Three new faces have been added to the Proteas squad, with Aiden Markram – who has featured in Tests and ODIs – in line for a T20 International debut alongside recent debutant in the 50-over format, Anrich Nortje and his Warriors teammate, Sinethemba Qeshile – an exciting 19-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman.
The visitors, on the other hand, are lead by veteran paceman Lasith Malinga, and their squad features a couple of returnees.
Spinner, Jefferey Vandersay is back in the mix, having last played a T20 International in the 2016 ICC World T20. Former skipper, Suranga Lakmal, who played no part in the ODI series, has also been included.
Batsman, Priyamal Perera will be looking to make his T20I debut, while there is still no place in the squad for veteran pair, Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews, who lost their place in the setup following Sri Lanka’s abysmal 2018.
Faf du Plessis (capt), Quinton de Kock, JP Duminy, Reeza Hendricks, Imran Tahir, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Dale Steyn, Rassie van der Dussen.
