Mwape Musonda could not steer Black Leopards to safety on the final day of the PSL 2018/19 season, but managed to finish as the top goal scorer – while that honour fell to Khomotso Masia, who’s first goal of the season did the job.
The Zambian international stands head and shoulders above the league’s top marksmen with his 16 goals scored, as he became the first player to crack the 15-goal mark in the local top flight in seven years.
That feat was last achieved by a then-34-year-old Siyabonga Nomvethe, who finished with 20 goals in the colours of Moroka Swallows in the 2011/12 campaign.
The veteran played his final game in a parallel fixture on Saturday as his AmaZulu concluded their season against Bloemfontein Celtic in East London, where Tshegofatso Mabaso also could not add to his tally of nine goals, which puts him behind Musonda in the goal-scoring charts.
The 22-year-old is tied for second with Bidvest Wits’ Gift Motupa, as well as Thembinkosi Lorch, who’s brace against Polokwane City fell short of securing the elusive league title for Orlando Pirates.
No less than five players finished with eight goals, with the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns Lebohang Maboe and Bonginkosi Ntuli of AmaZulu all in the thick of things.
