The latest developments in the PSL make Chippa United vs Cape Town City a game of high magnitude, as they square off at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday night.
The visitors have been handed a boost in their title challenge, following a sanction given out to Bloemfontein Celtic for their part in the pitch invasion that halted proceedings when the Citizens visited Dr Molemela Stadium earlier in April.
Although only 23 minutes of play was possible, the men from the Mother City have effectively been declared winners of the clash after a PSL Disciplinary Committee found Phunya Sele Sele guilty of not providing adequate security for the match – awarding three points the other way.
This has kept City’s slim title hopes alive, as they can get a maximum of 53 points – the same tally accumulated by the table-topping Orlando Pirates, whom they face in one of their three remaining fixture.
For their opponents, it’s a battle for survival as they look destined to contest the relegation/promotion playoffs, given their precarious league position.
The Chilli Boys are second-last on the log at 24 points with just three matches left to play.
Although only four points above automatic relegation, coaching Clinton Larsen believes picking up that exact tally in their remaining fixtures will get them home and dry – and three on Friday will be a giant leap towards achieving that.
“The log standings will keep changing now, but we need to get four points and hopefully it starts in this game against City,” Larsen said.
“And I believe with our last two games against Polokwane City or Kaizer Chiefs a point will be enough for us to be home and dry.”
With striker Kermit Erasmus suspended after a violent outburst that earned him a straight red against Highlands Park, the burly Siphelele Mthembu is expected to lead the line on Friday.
For Chippa, a decent showing against Mamelodi Sundowns – albeit in a losing effort – may just see Larsen stick with the same XI.
Kick off is at 20:00.
Chippa: Mzimela, Makobela, Keita, Modisane, Tlolane, Malepe, Komane, Mayambela, Klate, Gamildien, R. Manzini.
