South African fans of the Premier League might find themselves in a tricky situation this Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day is celebrated in South Africa on the second Sunday of May which means that the unofficial holiday clashes with the final matchday of the 2018/19 Premier League season.

The Premier League race will go down to the wire with title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City keeping each other honest in the run-in.

Mother’s day mayhem

Mothers who are fans of the Premier League are in luck of course as they get to use the day as an excuse to control the remote control, but the rest of us are faced with the prospect of excusing ourselves from family gatherings and sneaking off to stream matches off our phones in the loo.

We have a feeling that a great many lads and lasses across the country will be ‘suddenly called in to work’ on Sunday 12 May.

Any plans I may have had to spend the day with my mum hinged on securing some R5 tickets on Flysafair‘s sale but I spent several hours staring at a waiting room screen in vain, like many other South Africans. Sorry Ma.

On the local scene the Premier Soccer League has had the good sense to schedule their final matchday on Saturday 11 May, avoiding the clash with the world’s most popular league and Mother’s day.

Mothers of Liverpool fans are likely to be hardest hit with the knowledge that just about any result could possibly reduce them to a quivering heap of tears. Liverpool’s official supporters clubs home bases in Mitchell’s Plain and Kensington could prove to be popular venues for a late afternoon Mother’s day tipple.

All matches on the final day of the Premier League season will kick off at 16:00 SAST.

If you’re hoping to catch some of the action, might we suggest booking mum into a spa and ensuring she is being pampered and treated while you sneak off and watch the most exciting climax to a Premier League season since City’s maiden title win.

Liverpool will host Wolves at Anfield while their title rivals City travel to the English south coast to face Brighton and Hove Albion.

Manchester United will take on already relegated Cardiff City knowing they will be taking up a place in the Europa League next season. Arsenal need to win and hope they can score enough to erode Tottenham’s superior goal difference, while they will also need their London rivals to lose to avoid failing to make the Champions League for the second season in a row.
