After a weekend of cup action, the PSL returns with a rare Monday night fixture between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns at Orlando Stadium.

The two giants of local soccer are separated by just three points, with the defending champions summiting the league table with 43, while their opponents are currently in third place.

After playing to a goalless draw in the reverse fixture at Loftus, a similar result could be detrimental to both sides’ title push, with the likes of Bidvest Wits, Cape Town City and Supersport United all within a shot of top honours.

Despite the clash’s significance in the title race, players from both camps have denied that it is a potential decider, with Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana pointing out to the number of fixtures still left to play.

“When I look at the log standings‚ there are about four to five teams who can still win this league‚” he said.

“There is still a lot of football to be played before the end of the season and I honestly don’t think the result of this match on Monday will decide who will win the league.”

The midfielder echoed sentiments shared by his Buccaneers counterpart Ben Motshwari, who underlined the importance of collecting three points from the encounter.

“I honestly feel like the game on Monday is not a title decider, because there are still games to play after that.

“And for us as Orlando Pirates, we’re not going into the match as if it’s a title decider, we’re just going there to collect three points.

“We’ll then turn our focus to the next match, and then the next match after the next match. So for us, it’s not a title-decider.”
