Maritzburg United midfielder Fortune Makaringe will be in Orlando Pirates in the upcoming season, according to Farook Kadodia, chairman at the “Team of Choice”.
The player was given a send-off by coach Eric Tinkler during Maritzburg’s promotion playoff victory over Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila over the weekend, and has long been linked with the Soweto giants.
He confirmed his departure from the club during his post-match TV interview with Supersport, after being crowned man of the match.
“Yes, it was goodbye for me. The chairperson [Kadodia] always tell us he will always allow us to grow as footballers. It’s very emotional for me because this team took me from nowhere,”
Fortune Makaringe headed to Orlando Pirates
On Monday, Kadodia revealed Makaringe’s next destination, stating that the two clubs had reached an agreement early last season, with Siphesihle Ndlovu – linked with both Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns – also set to depart.
“We are at an advance stage with Orlando Pirates regarding Makaringe.
“They made a formal approach unlike other speculation that have been circulating in the media.
“We made a promise at the beginning of the season to both Makaringe and Siphesihle Ndlovu that I’m not going to hold them, irrespective of where they want to go. As long as the club can reach an agreement.
“That’s why the coach felt it was fitting for him to allow them a farewell at halftime on Saturday. So Makaringe will definitely be joining Pirates. We just need to finalise that.”
Makaringe made his top-flight debut for Maritzburg United in October 2015, and has gone on to make 69 league appearances for the club.
His performances in the recent season have seen him earn a call-up to Stuart Baxter’s Bafana squad for the upcoming Afcon tournament in Egypt later in June.
