Monday was an especially busy day for Orlando Pirates, who announced a total of seven signings, with two of those joining from Maritzburg United.

Midfielders Fortune Makaringe and Siphesihle Ndlovu joined the Buccaneers from the Team of Choice, having been strongly linked with the Soweto giants throughout the off-season.

While the duo’s ex club would have been reeling from losing two players who were integral to their survival in the top flight, club chairman Farook Kadodia lauded the pair for the growth they displayed in what was to become their final season in the KwaZulu-Natal outfit.

“Fortune and Siphesihle have been an integral part of the team over the past few seasons and have become household names due to their consistent excellence on the football field,” the Team of Choice chairman said in a statement.

“In an ideal world, of course, we would have liked to keep players like these, but such is the nature of football across the world, that good performances will be recognised by bigger clubs.

“We also have to respect that players want to move on to fresh challenges and test themselves in new environments – it would not be fair to stand in their way.

“It’s been fantastic to see how the two players have grown in stature during their time with Maritzburg United, and it’s a tribute to the club’s commitment to development and to those coaches who have worked hard to help them realise their full potential.”

Makaringe and Ndlovu joined Orlando Pirates along with ex-Bloemfontein Celtic trio Bongani Sam, Kabelo Dlamini and Tshegofatso Mabasao – with former France junior international goalkeeper Joris Delle also unveiled as a new Buccaneer.

The group have already completed their medicals at their new club and have already began pre-season preparations in the absence star players of Innocent Maela and Thembinkosi Lorch, who are in Egypt for the 2019 African Cup of Nations.
