Paris St Germain striker Neymar has been banned for three Champions League matches after a disciplinary committee took a dim view of his comments after his club’s Champions League exit.

Neymar took to Instagram to unleash a diatribe against the match officials shortly after the defeat to Manchester United in Paris in March. United were awarded a stoppage-time penalty for a debatable handball via the video assistant referee (VAR) system. Marcus Rashford slotted the penalty and Manchester United went on to win the match and take the tie despite losing the first leg at home 2-0.

The Brazilian did not play in PSG’s knockout stage campaign having spent much of the season sidelined with injury but was so reportedly enraged he had to be restrained by PSG staff to stop him entering their dressing room.

“It’s a disgrace. They get four guys who don’t understand football to watch a slow motion replay in front of the TV … Go fuck yourselves!” Neymar wrote in Portuguese on the social media website.

On 13 March 2019 UEFA announced that Neymar would be investigated for the social media post and his behaviour at the Parc de Princes.

“A disciplinary investigation has been initiated … in connection with the comments made on social media by the Paris Saint-Germain player Neymar following the above-mentioned match,” UEFA said in a statement.

Neymar has yet to respond to the news of the sanction but an appeal is understood to be unlikely.

The sanction will take effect in the 2019/20 Champions League group stage and will apply even if Neymar leaves PSG for another European club in the closed season.

PSG have already sealed their place in next year’s Champions League group stage but will be without the services of their superstar striker for the first half of their pool games.
