Kaizer Chiefs have wrestled their way to becoming favourites to win the Nedbank Cup, but face a tricky opponent in Chippa United, who they travel to meet at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.

Four teams remain in the competition, and the side which manages to prevail in the Windy City will face one of Lamontville Golden Arrows and Chippa United in the final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, 18 May.

Despite homeground advantage, the Chilli Boys go into this clash as underdogs, but will not be too perturbed by the label, as they donned it proudly in the three rounds leading up to the semifinals.

The men from PE have claimed some big scalps on their path to the last four, stunning pre-tournament favourites Mamelodi Sundowns in the first round, before ending 2010 winners Bidvest Wits run in the quarterfinal stage.

They face a side desperate to end a trophy drought closing in on four years, since winning the league title under Stuart Baxter in 2015.

Since the Englishman’s departure, the Glamour Boys have gone through two mentors before welcoming back a familiar face in German tactician Ernst Middendorp in December 2018.

The former Maritzburg United coach earned the Soweto giants two trophies in his previous stint at the club, and believes the sooner he adds to that tally, the less pressure he will be working under.

“Every cup‚ or every success‚ in the end‚ during the run-in to the end of the season‚ now or in the near future‚ if you win the Carling Black Label Cup on July 27 against Pirates convincingly — yes‚ it’s much easier,” he told reporters on Wednesday.

“You build up your confidence. You build up as a player‚ as a technical team‚ as a team in general.

“So‚ all this stuff — of course‚ with each and every result‚ with every winning game‚ and probably a good performance in addition‚ it’s definitely something.

“I can agree — it makes life a little bit easier‚ for each and everybody. Because building confidence is part of the story if you want to be successful.”
