Pitso Mosimane led his Mamelodi Sundowns side to a record ninth PSL title, achieving an individual milestone in the process.

The Brazilians withstood relentless attack from a desperate Free State Stars to run off 1-0 winners on Saturday, successful defending their title with a rampant Orlando Pirates hot on their heels.

This handed their coach a fourth league title, making him the only man to hoist the PSL trophy as many times with the same team.

Overall, the 54-year-old became only the third coach to triumph four times in the local top flight, joining former Sundowns coach Gordon Igesund and Bidvest Wits mentor Gavin Hunt in achieving the feat.

Igesund emerged victorious with four different teams, first taking the unfancied Manning Rangers to the inaugural PSL title in 1996/97, before a double with two different teams in Orlando Pirates and Santos.

The experienced tactician won his last title with the Tshwane giants in the 2006/07 campaign, before their city rivals Supersport United dominated the league for the next three season, thanks to Hunt’s expertise.

The former Hellenic defender led Matsatsantsa to three consecutive titles between 2008 and 2010, before eventually swapping the blue for the white of The Clever Boys, where he handed the side their first ever league title in almost a century of existence as they were crowned 2016/17 champions.

Mosimane got his first taste of league glory on his second season at Sundowns, as he hoisted the coveted trophy at the end of the 2013/14 season before repeating the feat in 2015/16 then claiming back-to-back titles in the two most recent PSL season.
