Allrounder Chris Morris will replace fast bowler Anrich Nortje in the Proteas World Cup squad after injury struck the quick.

Nortje was forced to withdraw from what would have been a maiden IPL campaign with a niggle earlier this season but a fractured hand while training in the nets has now ruled him out of the World Cup.

Convener of selectors Linda Zondi said Morris had always been in the Proteas plans despite only playing in Twenty20 matches at international level in the past year. Morris has been turning out in the IPL with the Delhi Capitals alongside compatriot Kagiso Rabada.

“Chris is our next best option with the ball,” said Zondi. “He has the pace and death-bowling skills and also gives us depth as a deadly finisher with the bat. We have had concerns around his injuries and workload capabilities but this is an opportunity for him to make a mark on the biggest stage.”

Rabada himself had to return home from the IPL after suffering a back strain that will require two to three weeks of rest before the quick can return to bowling. Dale Steyn played just two matches in the IPL before he complained of a sore shoulder and was yanked out of the event by CSA.

Nortje suffered his latest injury while practising in the nets in his home town, Port Elizabeth, on Monday.

“He immediately consulted a hand surgeon and underwent surgery to stabilise the joint and will unfortunately be sidelined for up to eight weeks,” said team doctor Mohammad Moosajee.

The Proteas do not currently have any fully fit frontline fast bowlers with Lungi Ngidi recovering from a side strain the prevented him from joining Imran Tahir and Faf du Plessis at the Chennai Super Kings. Ngidi is approaching full fitness though and is likely to play in the Proteas CWC warm-up games.
