Maritzburg United secured a spot in the PSL for the upcoming season by beating National First Division outfit Royal Eagles in the promotion/relegation playoffs at Chartsworth Stadium in Durban on Wednesday.

The Team of Choice had finished 15th on the league table – escaping automatic relegation on the final day of the season, with Free State Stars getting the axe.

They went into the penultimate play-off match needing just a point to survive the drop after beating both Eagles and Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila in the previous legs.

Goals from Mamelodi Sundowns-bound Siphesihle Ndlovu and former Orlando Pirates striker Thabiso Kutumela ensured Eric Tinkler’s men would survive to live another season in the top flight as the three points gained gave them an unassailable lead in the table.

Ndlovu’s low shot three minutes from the break broke the deadlock, giving the winless Eagles an uphill climb in their bid to stop their neighbours.

It remained 1-0 for much of the second half before Kutumela doubled the scoring the 73rd minute.

The final whistle took Maritzburg’s points tally in the cocompetition to nine as they sport a perfect record so far ahead of what’s now a dead-rubber at home to Tshakuma on the weekend.

The Team of Choice kicked off their campaign for survival earlier in the month with a 1-0 victory over Eagles at Harry Gwala Stadium before travelling to Thohoyandou, where they overcame Tshakuma with a 2-0 win.

The two first division outfits squared off at the latter venue on Saturday, with the hosts coming off tops by winning 2-1.
