Jurgen Klopp sent on Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson in the second half of their Friday night clash with Southampton asking him to go out and make a difference.

The skipper remains one of the most underrated players in the group, at least from a fans point of view, but he produced an assist and a goal in a half hour shift that proved decisive in his team’s 3-1 win at St Mary’s.

Henderson said both he and James Milner were given the same message by the German who was frustrated to see his team go behind early on before Naby Keita’s first goal for Liverpool levelled matters before half time.

When asked what that message was after the game, Henderson told Liverpoolfc.com: “Make a difference.

“Use our experience and then make a difference. Help the lads, get them going because we were under a bit of pressure.

“I felt as though we did that coming on, but so did everybody else. We kept going right until the end and we kept fighting and thankfully we managed to score a couple of goals and win the game.”

Comeback kings Liverpool

The result was the third straight win on the road for Liverpool where they have had to come back from a deficit. Henderson stressed the never say die attitude that Klopp expects from his players.

He added: “The manager has been big on that. He was big on that when he first came in a few years ago – that no matter what happens in the game, we still fight right until the very end.

“That is what we have been doing for a long time now and we need to keep that mentality going and not stopping until that final whistle goes.

“To go 3-1 up and kill the game off really was a big moment and a big result for us. That’s the most important thing, but going a goal behind we were really pleased that we managed to keep going and stay in the game.

“It was a must-win [game], we knew that, so it’s a big result for us going forward.”

The win takes Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League table where they will stay until at least next weekend with City pressed into FA Cup semi-final action this weekend.
