Kaizer Chiefs suffered their worst finish in the PSL era, as they lost to Chippa United in Port Elizabeth to place ninth on the log.

Amakhosi were beaten 1-0 by the Chilli Boys at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday, with the hosts securing a spot in the 2018/19 campaign by avoiding relegation.

For the Soweto giants, this means they will not feature in the coming season’s first cup competition for the first time since the 2006/07 season, where they had current mentor Ernst Middendorp as coach for the first half of the campaign.

Kaizer Chiefs’ worst PSL finish

The Glamour Boys have been a constant feature in the top-eight throughout the PSL era, only failing to finish in the top half of the table on two occasions.

After cracking the top three in each of the first five seasons of South Africa’s newly-remodeled league, and narrowly missing out on a maiden title to bitter rivals in the 2000/01 season, Chiefs crashed out their lowest finish the very next season.

Santos were the shock champions on that occasion, with Amakhosi only managing ninth place after winning just 12 of their 34 matches to collect a meagre 49 points.

The feat was repeated once more in the 2006/07 campaign when their 11 wins took them to 42 points.

The most recent finish may be the joint third in terms of league position, but it’s their worst when it comes to the points tally.

Having not managed a victory in the last seven outings, Chiefs managed just 39 points, also recording their least number of wins in the PSL’s 23 years.

How Chiefs’ worst season measures up against their rivals

Out of the so-called “big three” of the local game, Amakhosi’s worst finish is slightly better than their biggest rival’s most wretched season.

During the 2016/17 campaign, Orlando Pirates shipped six goals twice to finish a staggering 11th place, having been on a steady decline since their last league title.

For Mamelodi Sundowns, their worst is the best out of all three teams, as they dipped down to eight in the 2011/12 season, before recovering well enough in the subsequent campaigns to hover in and around the top three.
