A player exodus was always expected at Kaizer Chiefs at the end of the season, but the club dropped a bombshell on Thursday by releasing three players from their contracts with weeks remaining in the 2018/19 campaign.
Pule Ekstein, Gustavo Paez and Kgotso Malope parted ways with the club by mutual consent and, according to the club’s football Bobby Motaung, more player movements are to be anticipated.
With more players linked with a move away from Naturena, Motaung hinted at more exits when speaking to the club’s website.
“When we sign players, we do so with the best of intentions.
“Bringing any player at Chiefs is with a view of a successful partnership. But sometimes things don’t work as planned. I wish all the players all of the best going forward.”
Another player clear out could hit Kaizer Chiefs
Player clear-outs have been sort of a norm at Kaizer Chiefs in past seasons, and Motaung’s comments indicated that the end of the current season would be no different.
“It is a norm that at the end of the season we will cconsolidate all the technical reports and decide on the way forward for next season. All other player movements will be announced in due course.”
Players linked with a move away from Naturena
With a new coach in tow, the Glamour Boys are expected to freshen their squad up a bit, having endured a difficult season as far as the league is concerned.
Ekstein and Paez have long been linked with moves away from the club, while a few more players are said to also be on their way out.
Defender Joseph Malongoane – who recently returned from an injury that’s kept him out of action for over eight months – is one of a few players whose contracts expire at the end of the season, alongside winger Bhongolwethu Jayiya.
Another player who could be prompted to seek a new home is goalkeeper Virgil Vries, who slipped down the pecking order after not grabbing his opportunity under coach Ernst Middendorp, and could find game time even harder to come by with the imminent return of Itumeleng Khune from injury.
Kaizer Chiefs’ next assignment is a trip to Polokwane, where they are set to meet Bloemfontein Celtic at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.
Kick off is at 20:15.
