Kaizer Chiefs coach, Ernst Middendorp is not expecting any of his injured players back for the Nedbank Cup clash against Cape Town City in Mbombela on Sunday.
Injuries have been a constant throughout Amakhosi’s 2018/19 campaign, with the likes of Itumeleng Khune and Joseph Malongoane ruled out for the rest of the season, while players such as Lebogang Manyama and Eric Mathoho could still return after lengthy lay-offs.
However, according to Middendorp, none of the injured players will be available for the crucial clash on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the German declared a number of key players unavailable for th must-win encounter.
“It’s totally not ideal for us as a club or brand, what happened in the near past, but we can only repeat, the fact is nobody from the injury list is coming back.
“We can mention all the same names, Manyama, Mathoho, Ngcobo, Mashiane, whatever, we can continue, but nobody is prepared for this game we’re going into.”
However, despite not having any players returning for Sunday’s match, Middendorp did reveal that it hasn’t been all doom and gloom on the injury front, with some players making progress
“At the moment I‘m quite happy that players like ‘Rama’ [Ramahlwe Mphahlele], Philani Zulu and some other guys that came back from long-term injuries are getting better and better.
“Reeve Frosler was a bit disturbed with getting invited for the [SA under-23] camp. I would have loved to see him here working on his intensity and what he has to do, but okay. In the end, he was sent home with a reason I could have discussed before his invitation.
“Nonetheless, we will prepare ourselves to go with the right mentality and show the right attitude with the players we have for Sunday’s game. We have enough potential.”
Kick off on Sunday is at 15:00.
