Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Shaun Bartlett has revealed he has a lot of admiration for much maligned mentor Ernst Middendorp.

The German tactician has come under intense fire following the club’s recent turn of fortunes, having taken over from Giovanni Solinas in December 2018.

Kaizer Chiefs had a paltry return of 16 wins in 41 matches across domestic competitions in the 2018/19 season, with Middendorp overseeing nine of those victories.

Bartlett, who has been part of the setup throughout Middendorp’s tenure has described the experience as refreshing.

“Obviously, nobody will realise the amount of work the man puts in, waking up at two in the morning and sending me emails at four in the morning.

“That’s what he’s all about, and that’s why I enjoy working with him, everything is down to details, every match, every training, you get what you’ll be doing the next day already before you get to training. And you know exactly what’s going to happen.

“Even some matches also, every detail is there for the players and caching staff, how things must be implemented and how [tactics] should be applied.”

Kaizer Chiefs finished ninth on the PSL table before suffering an embarrassing 1-0 defeat to TS Galaxy in the Nedbank Cup final.

The club has also been without a trophy for four years, last picking up silverware with the 2014/15 league title.
