South Africa, or Bafana Bafana, are back in the continent’s flagship tournament after missing out in 2017, but face a difficult assignment in Egypt first up.
They clash with two-time champions, Ivory Coast. The Elephants most recently won the tournament in 2015, although their fortunes took a dip since then. Still, the rebuilding has started and while Bafana Bafana have a good record against Les Elephants (they have never lost), Stuart Baxter’s men aren’t exactly predictable.
Here’s how the two teams compare on some key stats.
Ivory Coast vs South Africa: Head-to-head
The two sides have played each other six times. South Africa has never lost against The Elephants. They last met in a friendly back in 2014. South Africa won 2-0. There have been two goalless stalemates between the two sides. Back in 2002 during qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations and in 1994, on their first meeting in what was called “the Simba Cup”.
