It’s the international break, but that doesn’t mean that there’s no money to be won. We’re putting the Premier League and the PSL on ice for the next few days, as we delve into the best picks from the national fixtures and the lower leagues of English soccer. We believe these betting tips are just the tonic for the weekend ahead.
With our “Head Start” column – trust me, we’ve had a lot of fun with my surname over the years – we are putting together the bets that make logical sense, rather than the ones that are based on emotion. As we always say, bet with your head and not your heart… Let’s get cracking!

Best betting tips for soccer on Saturday 23 March
Sweden vs Romania
Zambia vs Namibia
Georgia vs Switzerland
Mansfield Town vs Crewe Alexandra
- Total value: 14.55 – a R100 bet would win your R1 455 back.
Sweden have looked like a team on the rise over the past 18 months, and we back them to get their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign off to a flyer. Zambia can be trusted to make home advantage count, whereas Switzerland are good odds to beat minnows Georgia. In England’s League Two, Mansfield are red-hot favourites to beat Crewe.
The long shot
Niger vs Egypt
Guinea-Bissau vs Mozambique
Malta vs Faroe Islands
AFC Wimbledon vs Gillingham
Macclesfield Town vs Stevenage Borough
Egypt are the “safest” bet on this particular accumulator. Speaking of “Faroes”, the islanders should make light work of Malta. Guinea-Bissau have too much in the locker for Mozambqiue, too. Back in England, Wimbledon look ready to extend Gillingham’s miserable away record, and Macclesfield are alive and kicking in their relegation battle.
- Total value: 44.22 – a R100 bet would win your R4 420 back.
Both teams to score
Bradford City vs Blackpool
Peterborough United vs Southend United
Colchester United vs Tranmere Rovers
Grimsby Town vs Bury
Zimbabwe vs Congo
Italy vs Finland
- Total value: 69.96 – a R100 bet would win your R6 996 back.
Double trouble: Winners and Both Teams To Score (BTTS)
Italy vs Finland
Bosnia and Herzegovina vs Armenia
- Total value: 16.50 – a R100 bet would win your R1 650 back.
This is a formula that’s bought us a bit more joy recently. Adding a “both teams to score” element to whatever team you’re backing to win gives your odds a brilliant boost. Italy are still finding their feet under Roberto Mancini, and may struggle with Finland’s Teemu Pukki. He’s scored more than 20 goals for Norwich in the Championship this year.
Elsewhere, Bosnia aren’t hitting the same heights they were a few years ago. They have the muscle to brush Armenia aside, but don’t rule out the visitors finding a way on to the scoresheet.
Betting tips for Libya vs South Africa
Libya winning at half-time,
- Total value: 16.42 – a R100 bet would win your R1 642 back.
Bafana Bafana fans will have to hold their breath this weekend, as South Africa must avoid defeat to ensure qualification for AFCON 2019. We’ve got a feeling they won’t make it easy on us, either.
Libya are a good footballing side capable of containing Stuart Baxter’s boys. The Bafana team don’t exactly set the world on fire when they travel, and we predict a nervy start for our lads. However, there should be enough quality to draw us back into the game. It’ll be a nail-biter on Sunday!
