Shane Long made history during the 2018-19 English Premier League season.

As Watford hosted Southampton, the striker scored the fastest ever goal in Premier League history. He broke a record that had existed for almost two decades.

Long charged down Craig Cathcart’s clearance and pounced on
the loose ball to dink over Ben Foster and write his name into the record
books.

While it’s impressive in the context of the EPL, it’s some
way off the fastest ever when looking at all football matches.

A number of players in varying leagues all over the world have found the back of the net after just two seconds. We’re not judging the level of football in these leagues, guys… we’re just stating the facts.

But let’s focus on the English Premier League for a second.

Fastest English Premier League goals ever

Time (sec) Player Match
07.69 Shane Long Watford vs Southampton
09.82 Ledley King Bradford City vs Spurs
10.52 Alan Shearer Newcastle vs Man City
10.54 Christian Eriksen Spurs vs Man Utd
11.90 Mark Viduka Charlton vs Leeds
12.16 Dwight Yorke Coventry vs Aston Villa
12.94 Chris Sutton Everton vs Blackburn
13.48 Kevin Nolan Blackburn vs Bolton
13.52 James Beattie Chelsea vs Southampton
13.64 Asmir Begovic Stoke vs Southampton

“It’s a record, is it?” Long told Sky Sports News with a grin after the game.

“Straight from the kick-off we wanted to put them under pressure. 99 times out of a hundred you block it and it doesn’t work but this time it did.”

“It’s nice to have a record like that, but it would have been nicer if it was the winning goal,” Long added.

King was watching Tottenham’s game against Brighton on
Tuesday when he discovered that his 19-year record had been broken.

After King’s goal, the next fastest strike in Premier League
history was scored by Alan Shearer after 10.52 seconds for Newcastle against
Manchester City in 2003.

Christian Eriksen scored after 10.54 seconds for Tottenham
against Manchester United last season.

Fastest goal scored in the PSL

If you’re wondering how the PSL compares when it comes to fastest goals… well, South Africa’s premier competition isn’t too great at keeping perfect records. But  Aleni Lebyane is credited as the fastest to score in the PSL, taking nine seconds to score back in 2010. Lebyane was playing for Free State Stars against Santos in that fixture.
