Proteas fast bowler Dale Steyn will join the Royal Challengers Bangalore as a replacement for Nathan Coulter-Nile, the Australian having pulled out with a stiff back.

Steyn will turn out for the Bangalore franchise again having last been a part of their group in 2010.

This also marks his return to the IPL after two season gap. He also played just one match for Gujurat Lions in the 2016 edition.

Steyn withdrew from the 2017 auction after a major shoulder injury, and went unsold in the 2018 and 2019 auctions, with the prevailing belief being that he was increasingly a red-ball specialist. However Steyn’s return to white ball form in the Mzansi Super League has carried through to Limited Overs internationals and struggling RCB will welcome the fighting spirit of the Phalaborwa Express.

The man he replaces, Coulter-Nile, missed the start of the IPL due to national team commitments as Australia whitewashed Pakistan in a five-match one-day international series in the UAE, but now will be able to take no part in the tournament.

Coulter-Nile was due to join the team on 13 April.

The Aussie quick has bloomed with the ball recently and put in some great fighting lower order knocks, and this fresh setback will be a concern for Australia, who are set to announce their ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 squad on 15 April.

The Royal Challengers are winless in the 2019 IPL so far having lost each of their six matches this season, and their hopes of making the playoffs rest on a miracle run to the end of the campaign.

Steyn will be reunited with former Proteas skipper AB de Villiers at the Franchise as well as former coach Gary Kirsten. Kirsten is under pressure to get an all star RCB team firing and will hope the arrival of Steyn will be the boost the team so desperately needs.
