Black Caps vs Proteas commentary – preview

Black Caps vs Proteas commentary: The toss was delayed by a wet outfield in Birmingham but with the sun out it is only a matter of time before the battle is joined and the Black Caps face the Proteas.

The Proteas David Miller remained upbeat about getting a game in and his team’s chances of making it to the final four. Miller was also effusive in his praise of England skipper Eoin Morgan who smashed a World Cup and ODI record 17 Sixes against Bangladesh on Tuesday.

“It was phenomenal striking from Morgan,” Miller said.

“Nice to see other guys going and keep a tab on what’s happening. We know we have to win all our games from now – and we’ve prepped well for that. No, I don’t think it’s about over-analysing, we haven’t been at our best. We believe we can turn things around and qualify. It has been gloomy, but hopefully we can get a game and good game in.”

New Zealand will be keen to protect their middle-order from the wiles of Imran Tahir. Kane Williamson has been dismissed four times in eight games facing Tahir, averaging just 15.8 against him. The leggie has also nabbed Ross Taylor twice in five games, with Taylor scoring at a strike rate of just 56.

The Proteas Quinton de Kock will not have to face his Kiwi nemesis Jeetan Patel, or any other front-line off-spinners. New Zealand have left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner and leg-spinner Ish Sodhi available as their slow bowling options.

The Black Caps pace bowling has been very good with the two younger members, Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson outshining their senior counterparts.

The Proteas should enjoy the backing of fans of the West Indies, Pakistan and Bangladesh who could all do with the race for fourth place being opened up.
