Not known for his athleticism, unless sprinting towards the boundary to celebrate a wicket, South Africa’s veteran leg-spinner Imran Tahir displayed quick reflexes to dismiss Pakistan’s Imam Ul-Haq at Lord’s on Sunday.

In what was a meeting between two sides who have perhaps been the biggest let downs in the 2019 Cricket World Cup so far, stakes were still high for either side, who are both within a slim mathematical chance of making the last four.

Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed won the toss and opted to bat first, and his decision looked vindicated early on, with Imam and his opening partner Fakhar Zaman racing to 81 inside the 15th over before the first wicket.

Before providing the breakthrough, Tahir showed a glimpse of what his 40-year-old bones could still produce on the field, as he appeared to have caught a low catch to dismiss Zaman in the deep off Lungi Ngidi’s bowling, but he was ruled to have grounded the ball – with the help of technology.

However, with ball in hand, Tahir soon got his man – caught playing a nothing shot by Hashim Amla at slip – but the real magic moment came with the second wicket to fall off the same bowler.

Well set on 44, Imam drove one back towards the bowler, who dived to his right to catch a brilliant reflex catch, followed by the trademark sprint in celebration.

Tahir’s two wickets brought South Africa back into the contest, as Pakistan had lost both openers with 92 runs on the board.
