UCL fixtures on 16 April
Barcelona (1) vs (0) Manchester United – 21:00
Manchester United will need to repeat their Champions League last 16 heroics if they are to turn around their quarter-final tie against Barcelona.
The La Liga champions were rewarded for a strong first leg performance at Old Trafford with an away goal, as the unfortunate Luke Shaw deflected Luis Suarez’s downward header into his own net early on.
Any expected rampage from Lionel Messi and Co failed to materialize, with United flickering into life at times despite a lack of possession.
The Argentinian legend even ended up with a bloodied nose following a challenge by Chris Smalling best filed under “uncompromising”.
While Barca were left frustrated by a performance that never quite clicked into gear, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will need to summon up the spirit that saw them sneak past Paris Saint-Germain in the last round.
Better still, the boss has his treasure chest of happy memories to open from his part in the Red Devils’ 1999 Champions League final win in the Camp Nou against Bayern Munich.
Another late comeback in Spain would be just the job.
Juventus (1) vs (1) Ajax – 21:00
Juventus have their noses in front – just – ahead of their Champions League quarter-final second leg at home to Ajax on Tuesday night.
Cristiano Ronaldo predictably popped up with a flying header to snatch a potentially vital away goal at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam last week.
It was a goal that defied the tide of a first half that largely saw Juve on the back foot against their spirited young opponents.
The Dutch underdogs had chances via Hakim Ziyech, Donny van de Beek and Jurgen Ekkelenkamp.
But it was David Neres who curled home to level within seconds of the start of the second period.
It leaves the sides deadlocked as they head to the Allianz Stadium with a place in the semis at stake.
