The first of the Champions League Semi-final first leg matches is the meeting of Tottenham Hotspur and Ajax Amsterdam, a clash that has no clear favourite.
Spurs suffered their biggest selection blows in previous rounds, when Harry Kane’s season was terminated by an ankle injury in the first meeting with Manchester City. Son Heung-min has been suspended for the clash after picking up bookings in both legs of the sensational aggregate win over Pep Guardiola’s dominant side.
Like Spurs, few would have pegged Ajax for a place in the last four of Europe’s elite competition but a combination of enterprise and good luck has seen the Dutch turn up on the big stage again.
Ajax have a genuinely good collection of young players though and deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as some of the great sides of the past .
The men from Amsterdam have relatively few injury concerns in contrast to their English opponents with long-term absentee Hassane Bande the only player not expected to be available for the first leg.
Bookings have been wiped clear so only players sent off will be in danger of suspension for the second leg.
Spurs problems aren’t limited to their attacking options with midfielders Erik Lamela and Harry Winks as well as fullback Serge Aurier confirmed to be unavailable due to injury.
Tottenham were boosted by the news that Victor Wanyama, who limped off in the first half of the second leg against City last week will be fit to face Ajax in Tuesday night. Moussa Sissoko and Jan Vertonghen are doubtful but returned to training this week.
