It’s a battle between the 2016 and the 2017 champions as Mamelodi Sundowns visit Wydad Casablanca in Rabat for the first leg of their Caf Champions League semifinal tie on Friday.

The two sides have met twice already – with each claiming a win – having been pooled together in Group A of the competition, where the hosts finished first – thanks to a 1-0 victory in the group’s finale against Friday’s opponents.

The win served as revenge for the Moroccan side, following a defeat suffered in Pretoria in the reverse leg.

Both sides came through their quarterfinal ties rather comfortably, with Wydad leaving it until the second leg at home to thump Equatorial Guinea’s Horoya 5-0 after a goalless draw away, while Sundowns pulled off a remarkable 5-0 victory of their own against eight-time champions Al Ahly at home before holding on for a 5-1 aggregate score in Alexandria.

Having had to catch up on their domestic league, Pitso Mosimane’s men found themselves with a number of players nursing knocks, thanks to their gruelling schedule.

The Tshwane giants have been without the likes of goalkeeper Dennis Onyango and in their last two league encounters, while midfielder Gaston had a run against Chippa United.

Mosimane explained why he held back the Ugandan international, whom he says was fit enough to start.

“You know what happens in Wydad, you have seen games away. We need Denis in those games and we want to make sure Denis is available.

“He could have played, but we didn’t risk him.”
