Mamelodi Sundowns registered their first ever win over eight-time Caf Champions League winners Al Ahly in the most convincing fashion as they registered a 5-0 win at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

The two sides had met four times before, with the Egyptian giants winning two and, in their first encounter in 12 years, each outfit was looking to grab the initiative with a spot in the last four at stake.

It was a quick start from the hosts who, after a couple of early opportunities, were on the board when Tebogo Langerman’s ball from out wide was met by Themba Zwane who directed it into the back of the net in the 11th minute.

They didn’t have to wait long to double the lead as Wayne Arendse got on the end of a Gaston Sirino free kick to make it 2-0 inside the first half hour.

The Tshwane giants held on to their lead going into halftime, before making yet another breakthrough early in the second half.

The third goal came off the penalty spot as Ricardo Nascimento calmly slotted in to give his side some daylight.

Sundowns were still not done, as Sirino got his name on the scoresheet on the hour mark, making it 4-0.

The fifth goal came off a former Al Ahly player as Phakamani Mahlambi piled on more misery on his former side barely five minutes after coming in.

That was enough to take Sundowns into the second leg in Cairo well in the driving seat.
