Bongumusa Mthembu wins the 2019 Two Oceans Marathon

Road-running ace Bongumusa Mthembu added to his list of accolades by winning the men’s ultra leg of the 2019 Two Oceans Marathon.

The 35-year old cracked an impressive time of 3:08:40 and was followed by David Gatebe in a South African one-two, with Kenya’s Justin Cheshire rounding up the podium places.

This was his first Two Oceans crown to go with three Comrades Marathon winner’s medals – the last of those coming in 2018.

The women’s ultra marathon was won by another local in Gerda Steyn, who defended her 2018 crown in a time of 3:31:29, with Lesotho’s Mamorallo Tjoka (3:38:23) in second place and SA’s Irvette van Zyl finishing third at a time of 3:50:12.

On a day where South Africans dominated the podium, Elroy Galant won the men’s 21.1km half-marathon in a time of 1:30:20, while the women’s race was claimed by Namibia’s Helaila Johannes in 1:10:30.
