In their bid for a first league title in seven years, Orlando Pirates have a steep hill to climb as they travel across town for a meeting with 2016/17 champions Bidvest Wits on Saturday.

With half a dozen fixtures remaining before the winner is crowned, the match is the latest in a slew of recent clashes that have carried the label “title decider”, with a few more yet to come.

For the Soweto giants, it’s a last chance at silverware in this campaig, which has been elusive since the lifted the Nedbank Cup crown at the end of the 2013/14 season.

As was the case in that big final five years ago, Gavin Hunt was at the helm at the Students, squaring off against a Serbian mentor in Vladimir Vermezović who proved to be the last Pirates coach to triumph over the four-time PSL winner until the recent arrival of his countryman, Milutin Sredojevic.

Orlando Pirates record vs Bidvest Wits

League fixtures between these two sides have often provided results, with only two stalemates recorded in the last eight years.

The last draw came in April 2014 and, since then, Wits have been the dominant side – losing once before notching up six straight wins.

That trend was broken in the 2017/18 season when Pirates ran rampant behind closed doors at Orlando Stadium, winning 4-0 in what was a wretched title defence for the Clever Boys.

Wits have, however, avenged that defeat – albeit ever so slightly – as they triumphed once more in Soweto earlier in the current campaign, and will be hoping that result has signalled a resumption of normal service as two of South Africa’s oldest clubs return to a venue where the hosts have dominated their opponents in recent times.

At Bidvest Stadium, the hosts may have struggled this season – winning just three in ten – but will be confident against a side they have gotten the better of more often than not in recent years.

Pirates’ last away victory over Wits came in 2013, and putting the past behind them might serve them well going into this crunch encounter.
