A South African resident has started a petition to have the Northern Cape sold to Namibia.

Aiden van Niekerk’s plea on change.org is an attempt to urge president Cyril Ramaphosa to sell the province to South Africa’s neighbouring Namibians for R420 billion.

‘Sell Northern Cape to save Eskom’

The sum could then be used to erase Eskom’s debt, notes van Niekerk.

“Eskom has too much debt, taxpayers are tired of paying, and nobody lives in the Northern Cape. I don’t know, tell the Namibians it has a desert and a big hole or something,” reads the petition’s biography.

Van Niekerk has asked for a modest 200 signatures and, by Monday, had collected 83.

Some of the petition comments that have come in so far, via social media and change.org are rather telling – and others pure comedy gold:

  • “The Northern Cape is literally the armpit of South Africa. Yes, we can make it prosperous.”
  • “Let’s sell the Northern Cape to Namibia to cover the Eskom f*** up.”
  • “Northern Cape is an unnecessary expense to the government. All their municipalities are broke, Eskom is just giving them free electricity. The whole province is a waste of space.”
  • “GIVE IT TO NAMIBIA and let them be boring together.”
  • “Geographically speaking this province will complete namibia, if we can buy it we dont need to get all of it.”
  • “Namibia, let’s actually think about it seriously. Do we WANT the Northern Cape?”
