Julius Malema: What Juju has told us about his wife, children and family

Away from the glare of the media and the political gusto, Julius Malema is a family man.

Malema spends a lot of his time campaigning for land expropriation and dishing up whatever dirt he can find on the ANC and DA. But when he’s not whipping up his followers, he’s definitely a home-bird.

Juju has fiercely guarded his private life, but every now and then, he gives us a glimpse of bow he really feels about his pride and joys. We’re taking a quick look at some of the most revealing, loving and downright hilarious things he’s had to say about the Malema clan after they were thrust into the public spotlight last month.

Julius Malema’s wife, Mantwa Malema

One thing is clear about Julius Malema: His wife is the absolute queen of their household. Just one visit to his Instagram page will have you wading through sugary-sweet photos of the pair together, backed up by heartfelt captions and loving messages. Get a room, guys.

But the woman Juju refers to as “his management” is more than just the apple of his eye: Malema has credited her with being the inspiration behind his weight-loss journey and the CIC’s decision to give up alcohol. Here are a few of his choice “love letters” to Mrs Malema. Guys, if you need something for Valentine’s Day, this is your inspiration:

“I had to rush home to spend quality time with my wife. Please allow me the privilege of being next to you for your next fifty birthdays to come, because it feels good. I love you my management.”

“We are committed to growing old together and building our own family. We are successfully doing exactly that. For as long as I keep falling in love with you, this marriage will never fail”

“Thank you for giving me a perfect love and for being there for the boys. I am deeply grateful for having you as my permanent partner and will always love you”

Julius Malema’s children

The EFF leader has three boys, the two younger ones are with his current wife:

Ratanang, born in October 2006

Munzhedzi, born in October 2016

Kopani, born in February 2018

As you can imagine, Julius Malema is extremely protective when it comes to his offspring. In December, we saw exactly how far he was willing to go to protect his kids. After investigative journalist Jacques Pauw broadcast details of the Malemas’ current home, Juju took this as a major threat against his family:

“What worries me is that I have three little children in that house, that stay with her and anything could happen, it could get dangerous for them. Just wait until I involve Pauw’s wife and children, then you will say I am threatening journalists.”

“I still have bodyguards, and now my wife says strange cars are parking outside the house. And then driving away. Nobody must come there. When it comes to my wife and kids, I shoot to kill.”

As we’ve previously mentioned, it’s very rare for the Malemas to discuss their children in public. He has previously described his two youngest boys as “little fighters” and only posted snaps of them to social media on birthdays or special occasions. Julius did have this to say about Ratanang on Instagram, though:

“We’ve got an unbroken loyalty and friendship that has lasted more than 10 years. Nothing will separate us. [Ratanang] is capable of becoming anything, we must just support his choice but it is school first.”

Cousins

Not all of the CIC’s family dealings are jovial affairs, however. He’s been forced to distance himself from cousin Matsobane Phaleng, who was implicated in the VBS Bank scandal. It’s alleged he scored R5.9 million from looting the institution, but Malema states the pair “are not close“, and that Phaleng is “one of ten cousins” he very rarely sees.

Parents

Discussions about Julius Malema’s mother and father are strictly off limits to the EFF leader. His mother passed away when he was young and his father has been largely absent. During an ugly conflict with a friend in 2013, Juju candidly revealed that this is one red line no-one should cross.

“I know I am a target of assault. People are looking for me to make a single mistake and finish me. Because when you insult me about my mother, you really get to me.”
