Zindzi Mandela EFFWe knew it was coming, and the statement was worth the wait. The EFF have stoked tensions with AfriForum, who want Zindzi Mandela to be fired.

Following Zindzi Mandela’s explosive Twitter rant last Friday, the fallout has been nuclear. South Africa’s ambassador to Denmark – and the daughter of Nelson Mandela – has faced an outpouring of both criticism and support for sharing strongly-worded Tweets on land expropriation.

What Zindzi Mandela said about land

Mandela staunchly threw her support behind plans to return the land to displaced black citizens in South Africa, in order to reverse the legacy of apartheid. However, she did it by blasting white people and using language that is best described as “undiplomatic” – something of a cardinal sin for someone in her role.

Her call for action on land expropriation mirrors the policies of the EFF. So it was inevitable the opposition party would officially leap to her defence. In a very fiery statement, the red berets slam the “racists” who are trying to silence her voice, and praised the ambassador for “speaking the truth”. And yes, AfriForum got a tongue-lashing too…

“After Zindzi Mandela’s Tweets, the racist AfriForum called on her to be fired as an ambassador. We reject this call. No African child must be suppressed or threatened with losing her job for speaking the truth about the land.”

“There is nothing racist in stating the fact that white people drove a racist project of land dispossession called colonisation They gained cultural, religious and education superiority while demonising Africans. Zindzi Mandela must be defended from this racist onslaught.”

Where is Zindzi Mandela?

Meanwhile, the Department of International Relations and Cooperations (DIRCO) have confirmed they plan to speak to the ambassador about her Tweets. As soon as they can find her, that is. Minister Naledi Pandor confirmed they haven’t been able to reach Zindzi Mandela, but they do plan to discuss the issues raised by her outburst.

AfriForum have started a campaign to have Mandela removed from her diplomatic mission. They released a statement over the weekend, slamming her for using inflammatory language and expressing “racist” sentiments.

EFF influence

This isn’t the first time Zindzi Mandela has ended-up in the EFF’s good books at the expense of her father’s party, either. The ANC representative was pictured wearing an EFF hat and posing alongside Dali Mpofu for a photo back in April. Once again, the red berets are more than happy to lend their support to the official.
