Cyril Ramaphosa has his work cut out for him. The African National Congress (ANC) might have won the 2019 General Election, but support has dropped notably. Political pundits and armchair commentators alike have noted that this is the strongest message yet that the party is on notice.
Municipal elections could land another blow, but there’s
some time to make good on promises before those roll around. Then men and women
CR elect to serve in his cabinet will be integral to that turnaround.
There has been some speculation already over who will and won’t get a gig. A list of names has been circulating… apparently a leaked version of what the cabinet might look like. Of course, lists like these should be taken with a pinch of salt, especially under the political circumstances. However, if you’re interested in a bit of fodder, read about it here.
But now, back to business.
When Ramaphosa will announce his new cabinet
Ramaphosa will be inaugurated on Saturday, 25 May 2019. Before we get there, South Africa’s parliamentarians are set to be sworn in on 22 May 2019. In a routine procedure, MPs will elect the country’s president (Ramaphosa) who will then be inaugurated on 25 May 2019.
Following all of that hullabaloo, you can expect the new
cabinet to be announced on 26 or 27 May with swearing in taking place on 28
There’s currently no official word from the presidency on
when this announcement will just yet,
however, those details are likely to emerge after the inauguration.
It’s all a fairly routine process. But with so much resting
on the next 12 months, there’s no doubt the interest in who ends up in which
position will be more closely watched than usual, especially if the rumour is
true that DD Mabuza might get the boot.
