The most infamous employee of the SARS executive – Mmamathe Makhekhe-Mokhuane – has been back in the headlines on Monday, after it was revealed that she’s been on discretionary leave since last October.
The IT boss, who reluctantly made her name while trying to explain the e-filing issues with the tax firm, has been left in limbo for the past five months. Her legal team have revealed that they are seeking answers from SARS, as MMM attempts to get her career back on track.
SARS employee “left in limbo”
It’s understood that she was placed on discretionary leave at the end of October 2018. Following her car-crash interview, the IT specialist was then summoned to the Nugent Inquiry, which aimed to uncover the rot that had seeped into the tax firm during Jacob Zuma’s term as president. Her testimony was also berated by the panel.
Her position is one of the most important in the country, and it’s ultimately her remit to ensure all our tax data is stored safely and securely. This is a job she hasn’t been at the wheel for over the last 150 days, however.
How much money does Mmamathe Makhekhe-Mokhuane make?
With great power, comes great responsibility… and a huge pay-packet. It was revealed late last year that Mmamathe Makhekhe-Mokhuane earned R3.06 million over an 11-month period: That’s according to SARS’ annual financial report for 2017/18, which accounts for the pay rise she was able to secure from ex-commissioner Tom Moyane.
Upon her appointment as the head of Digital Information and Services Technologies, she immediately negotiated a 42% increase for the role, securing a wage that equated to R278 000 every month.
From this figure, we can deduce that she’s earned R1.39 million since she was told to stay at home by her superiors five months ago. In case you were wondering, that works out to an hourly-rate of R1 738.
It’s bloody nice work if you can get it, right? We’re expecting more feedback from her lawyer Moeketsi Raselo on Monday afternoon. Like his client, he is demanding an answer from SARS about where we must go from here.
Mmamathe Makhekhe-Mokhuane’s background and career
Despite Makhekhe-Mokhuane’s on-air gaffe, it seems she does have the skills to manage our bills. Her CV shows a wealth of experience in high-profile IT jobs, and mainly portrays a competent official who rightfully earned a shot in the SARS hot-seat:
As her profile on the SARS website reads, Mmamathe has several Information Technology diplomas from various institutions. While working at the Department of Transport as CIO, she also obtained a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the North West University.
But she has worked for both Supra Mahumapelo and Tom Moyane in the past decade. Their bad habits may have just rubbed off on the woman who became a meme overnight in South Africa.
