“The preliminary investigation has since indicated that the police were notified of an explosion that occurred and upon arrival, they (police) found the truck driver who narrated that the truck he was driving was involved in the explosion,” he said.

“The said truck was burned down with pieces of the wreckage scattered around. The road was severely damaged but no injuries were reported at the time. Reports also show that the truck was transporting explosives at the time of the incident,” he added.

OIL REFINERY EXPLOSION

One explosion many of us will remember was the Milnerton oil-refinery incident. Back in July, police confirmed that there had been an emergency situation whereby two people lost their lives and six others were injured.

“Two people (man and woman) were killed and six other injured in an explosion at the Astron Oil Refinery in Milnerton in the early hours of Thursday, 02 July 2020 at approximately 4:00. The cause of the explosion is still the subject of an investigation,” the South African Police Service said in a statement.

Astron Energy South Africa also confirmed the tragic incident saying that it occurred at its Milnerton Refinery at approximately 4:00 on 2 July 2020.

“Astron Energy immediately activated its emergency response procedures and notified the relevant authorities,” it said.
