Law enforcement in Limpopo has issued a safety warning after seven prisoners escaped from the police station in Modimolle on Sunday night.

Residents of the small town, located near the southern edge of the Waterberg Massif in Limpopo, have been urged to practice extreme caution, should they encounter any one of these seven prisoners.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Moatshe Ngoepa, could only confirm that the prisoners “escaped during routine service by police members.”

There was sensitive information Colonel Ngoepa could not reveal, due to the fact this was being treated as an ongoing investigation.

What are they in for?

However, the police did list the crimes each prisoner was held in custody for (prisoners listed according to line-up in the image above):

  • Polano Ndebele (27) was arrested for contravening of the Explosives Act
  • Thapelo Mello (24) was arrested for contravening of the Explosives Act
  • Themba Ncube (36) was arrested for contravening of the Explosives Act
  • Sello Rengane (35) was arrested for rape
  • Mpho Obvious Lesese (32) was arrested for armed robbery
  • Kenneth Shuma (30) was arrested for armed robbery
  • Kazen Dluwayo (33) was arrested for house robbery

11 prison escapes in six days

This is the second instance where prisoners have escaped from police custody. In the Eastern Cape, three inmates are still at large, after they successfully escaped from the Middledrift Correctional Centre on Tuesday, 7 May.

A task team has been established to fast-track the hunt for the suspects, who have been considered dangerous.

“Anyone with information that can lead to the re-arrest of these escapees is requested to contact Captain Richard Boshomane at 079 894 5501 or Crime Stop on 0860010111 or the Crime Line SMS 32211 or the nearest police station,” Colonel Ngoepa stated.
