We knew there would be drama: On Thursday, Bheki Cele confirmed he would be visiting Jacob Zuma at Nkandla. It’s not known what the pair are set to discuss – and their tea party will take place amid a backdrop of legal battles and factional wars involving the former president. However, MKMVA members haven’t been all that welcoming to the police minister.

Tea for two: Bheki Cele, Jacob Zuma meeting on Thursday

Since the weekend, ex-soldiers who form part of the MK Vets have been camped out at uBaba’s Nkandla residence, in order to ‘protect’ the 78-year-old from the possibility of being arrested. Zuma has flagrantly ignored a summons to appear at the State Capture Inquiry – forcing DCJ Zondo to seek a ‘term of imprisonment’ for his adversary, via ConCourt.

Doing his best Level 5 of lockdown impression, Msholozi decided to stay home – and his supporters are also standing their ground: Dozens remain at the sprawling homestead in KZN, and when Bheki Cele’s motorcade tried to pass through the crowd of dancing MKMVA members earlier on, the travelling party were stopped in their tracks.

Eventually, Bheki Cele was allowed to pass through and make his way towards Nkandla – which, at least, gave Jacob Zuma plenty of time to pop the kettle on. The Police Ministry has been suspiciously cagey about the purpose of the visit, claiming that they will ‘reveal all’ once the summit concludes. Put it this way: Something other than tea is brewing, here.
