Huawei, who now have the distinction of being the second biggest smartphone manufacturer in the world, has gone all out to create a very capable entry into the race for the top spot amongst the cream of the flagship crop.
There’s a heavy emphasis on the camera hardware. Huawei seemingly decided that the best place for them to create some distance to the competition is in their ability to capture video and photographs.
Groundbreaking mobile camera technology
Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer BG said the latest device “represents breakthrough after decades of digital camera technology development. He also added that it will rewrite the rules and “reshape the perception” we have of mobile photography:
“Innovations such as the Huawei SuperSpectrum Sensor and SuperZoom Lens allow us to push the envelope of not just photography, but videography as well – a frontier long overdue for disruption. The Huawei P30 Series will set the pace for the next several generations of smartphones.”
The Leica Quad Camera system that Huawei have packed into the P30 certainly looks to be a very impressive system.

The quad cam setup is made up of a 40MP main camera with Huawei SuperSpectrum Sensor, a 20MP ultra-wide angle camera, as well as an 8MP telephoto camera and a Huawei Time-of-Flight (TOF) Camera.
The main innovation in the photography array seems to be the inclusion of the Time-of-Flight camera. This camera will be tasked with recording precision depth of field information. Moreover, this will enable users to apply multiple levels of bokeh to their images.
Powerful hardware upgrades
In addition to the hardware upgrades, the P30 will be sporting AI technology to capitalise fully on its powerful hardware. Huawei AI HDR+ allows the front and rear cameras to combine multiple photos taken right after each other. It optimises overexposed photos and corrects selfies with backlighting.
The P30 series will have the Huawei Kirin 980 processor under the hood. In addition, it has a a graphene film cooling system to keep the device operating temperature at optimal level.
