An investigation has been launched by the fire department on Tuesday, after a huge blaze broke out at the Cape Gate Hospital in Brackenfell.

A team of firefighters has scrambled to extinguish a blaze at the Cape Gate Hospital in Brackenfell. The fire, which was reported after 20:00 on Monday evening, has left two people needing treatment for smoke inhalation.

The cause of this incident is yet to be established, but it is understood that the inferno came from a nearby storage room. Firefighters on the scene were also hampered in their operations after two water tanks at the facility caught fire.

The flames burned long into the evening, but in the early hours of Tuesday, the blaze had been contained. There are no deaths to report, and the swift actions of the emergency services have been lauded by local authorities.

Fire safety inspector called to investigate

Cape Town Fire and Rescue have issued a statement on the matter, confirming that an investigation is now underway:

“We received an emergency call at approximately 20:00. Firefighters from Kraaifontein, Durbanville, Brackenfell, and Bellville arrived on the scene. The first floor of that section of the Hospital has been evacuated and at this stage, two persons were treated for smoke inhalation.”

“The blaze has been contained. What section and extent of damages will only be known once it has been completely extinguished. A Safety Inspector has been requested to ascertain the cause of the fire. The flames that were visible in the videos that are doing the rounds were in fact two water tanks at the side of the building that was also burning.”
