An operation led by the Hawks has resulted in the arrest of three suspects, who are linked to a package found on an Intercape bus in Upington, Northern Cape, with drugs worth more than R3-million.

As reported by Times Live, the sting operation was part of a drive the Hawks have been on to intercept the movement of illicit drugs.

How the Hawks intercepted the Intercape bus

According to police spokesperson, Nomthandazo Mnisi, a tip-off received from a confidential informant led the team to the Intercape bus that was en route to Cape Town, from Johannesburg.

“Intercape received an anonymous tip-off phone call and immediately contacted the Upington narcotics bureau,” Mnisi said in a statement.

Upon searching the bus, a package with an undisclosed amount of marijuana, mandrax and tik was found. It is said that the exact street value of the drugs currently sits at R3.4-million.

Who are the suspects?

Mnisi revealed that the two bus drivers who drove the bus, as well as one other passenger, have been placed under arrest and hit with drug-related charges.

Although there is not much information, Mnisi stated that there is evidence that proves that the bus drivers were in cahoots with the passenger in the movement of the drugs.

Intercape launches internal investigation

Intercape, in response to the news, revealed that, at the moment, all they can do is launch an internal investigation into the matter to ascertain their employees’ involvement in the crime.

Currently, the two bus drivers have been suspended, pending the outcome of the internal investigation. If found to be involved in any way, they face immediate termination of their contracts.

“Due to legal limitations, we cannot confirm any matters under police investigation at this stage. We can, however, confirm that Intercape is also conducting its own internal investigation into the matter,” the bus service said.
