We know that foldable smartphones are all the rage right now, but have you seen a foldable television screen yet? LG Electronics is working on a TV which can be folded into six equal parts.

Let’s Go Digital uncovered a patent filed by LG back in March 2019 with the Hague International Design System for a ‘television receiver with flexible display’ and built-in soundbar.

The patent document and nine product sketches for the new screen design – which was approved by the Hague on 13 September 2019 – can be viewed here.

What are the benefits of a portable TV?

Well, other than it being cool as heck, just imagine all the places you could take it. From the campsite to the beach, never be without your favourite shows on a holiday again.

While many people are more than happy to watch TV on their tablets, laptops or smartphones, I’m assuming it would only really interest early adopters.

When will LG’s foldable TV be launched?

LG’s current OLED TV R is already slated for release in December 2019, meaning that we could expect to see LG’s foldable TV at the next Consumer Electronics Show in January 2020.

It’s highly unlikely that they would announce both TVs at the same event. However, a CES announcement is only speculation at this stage, LG hasn’t confirmed anything just yet.

How does the foldable TV work?

Let’s Go Digital explains that the flexible screen can be folded in diagonally, in 6 equal screen parts. A frame is provided on the sides that protects the flexible screen when folded.

A soundbar is also integrated. The patent description speaks of a square frame, while the images show a rectangular design.

Folding it into six equal parts makes this TV extremely compact. It can also be unfolded into a curved display. The foldable TV has a large aspect ratio, which will make the screen ideal for watching films.

The magical roll-up TV will allow owners to keep the screen in three positions: fully tucked away, unfurled in all its majesty and a ‘partially unrolled’ state where a little bit of screen is peeping from the box.

The TV will also more than likely be able to connect to the Internet. It’s unclear from the patent whether the new design comes with a remote, but you’d possibly be able to use your smartphone as a remote via an app.

It has to be noted that the patent was not applied for by LG Display, but by LG Electronics. This indicates that LG is probably further along with the development of this TV than we could assume.
