Noise cancellation

Apple’s new Airpod Pro model ships with active noise cancelling. The Airpod Pro’s noise cancellation, while still not as good as Sony’s WF-1000xm3 earbuds, will be good enough to see Apple dominate sales in the true wireless segment.

Microsoft released a statement on social media explaining that despite their original plans to release their Surface Earbuds offering this year the stars had failed to align, and they would be postponing the launch.

Why was the launch delayed?

While there’s was no official explanation for the delay, the most obvious reasons would be that Microsoft have either run into a technical problem while testing; or have production problems.

Chief Product Officer was at pains to point out that the delay was necessary and in the best interest of consumers. The Surface Earbuds could probably launch during the second quarter of 2020.

Its design has polarised opinion with Microsoft deciding on a very distinctive design. The Surface Earbuds feature solid circular surface which users can interact with to control them.

Design and dictation

When Microsoft initially announced them along with the latest Surface Pro 7, Surface Laptop 3 and Surface Pro X it’s fair to say that opinion on the earbuds was split. The circular disc is an unusual design choice which will most likely win it a small and devoted following.

This is always the danger with bucking trends and trying to innovate aesthetically. There’s just no guarantee that the market will be ready for such a significant change.

The Surface Earbuds is capable of both entertainment and as a office companion. The Surface Earbuds deal with voice and multimedia equally well; the touch and swipe controls make them easy to use.

Microsoft is even including dictation. Users will be able to make use of the feature in conjunction with Office Apps. The Surface Earbuds have two microphones built into each earpiece. This is improve noise reduction during calls and voice recording.
