Gather around, folks. It’s that time of the year again, when our politicians confuse the State of the Nation Address (SONA) with a matric dance or Dancing with the Stars auditions.

Every year, we are treated to some of the best (and worst) fashion wins and blunders. The red carpet is truly one of the highlights of the SONA. I mean, other than the state of our nation address itself, of course.

It’s a bit different this year, though. We don’t want to say that the budget cuts are hanging in the air, but the lavishness was definitely toned down to some extent.

We have two State of the Nation Addresses this year

This is our second SONA for the year, and the first of the 6th Parliament. If you were wondering why we are having a second SONA just four months after the first, it’s due to the recent election and changes in Parliament.

The newly-elected President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver his speech at 19:00. Don’t miss a moment, follow our live blog here.

Rumour has it the EFF might cause disruption. They made it clear that they are not happy with Cyril Ramaphosa. However, Ramaphosa managed to disarm the EFF earlier this year, so to speak.

Eskom’s and that tiny issue of R400bn is also on the agenda tonight. The power utility already had two multi-billion rand bailouts in 2019, and it seems another bailout may just be in the cards.

DA MP Phumzile Van Damme made a grand entrance, just days after making headlines for speaking up about the racist abuse she experienced at the V&A Waterfront earlier this week.

Briefly speaking to The South African, Shadow Minister of Public Enterprises Natasha Mazzone said President Cyril Ramaphosa is “surrounded by people who don’t want to see South Africa succeed.”

Kenneth and Lydia Meshoe smiled for the cameras as they made their way down the red carpet. Dare we say, couple goals?
