Nearly a week after Sea Point High School was targeted by armed robbers, investigators have made a breakthrough in the case, with the arrest of a 15-year-old suspect.

On Wednesday, 5 June, during an examination, suspects entered the school premises and held a classroom of more than 50 pupils at gunpoint.

The suspects, according to Western Cape’s minister of education, Debbie Schafer, fled with at least 50 cellphones, leaving a trail of fear behind them.

“It is reported that the suspects gained access to the school over the fence. The school has a security guard and CCTV cameras and we hope that the SAPS will use the camera footage to identify the suspects and ensure they face the full might of the law,” Schafer had said, in reaction to the incident.

It took investigators only five days to make a breakthrough in the case, thanks to the CCTV footage that was pulled from the scene of the robbery.

According to police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Andre Traut, a 15-year-old suspect from Phillippi East, a township on the outskirts of Cape Town, was placed under arrest for his alleged involvement in the robbery.

What’s even more shocking than his age is the fact that the suspect is a fellow pupil from Sea Point High School.

“During a search of his residence, six cellphone covers, believed to have been stolen during the robbery were found. He was identified by means of surveillance footage at the school when he and his accomplices entered the class room at around 10:10 while learners were writing exams. The teacher and learners were held at gunpoint and robbed of a number of cellphones,” Traut revealed.

The 15-year-old is due to appear in court for the charge of armed robbery on Tuesday. Traut also noted that investigators are hot on the heels of his accomplice.
